NFL Safety Rankings

Jake DeWitt

Tier 1

1. Tyrann Mathieu (Arizona Cardinals)
As mentioned in our cornerback rankings, Mathieu is the ONLY player to rank twice in two different positions, let alone in the top five in both! He’s the best overall defensive back in the game.

2. Earl Thomas (Seattle Seahawks)
Thomas is the staple of the Seahawks defense, despite the presence of others like Bobby Wagner, KJ Wright, Kam Chancellor, and Cliff Avril.

3. Harrison Smith (Minnesota Vikings)
He’s worth every cent the Vikings pay him. As the defensive leader, Smith has thrived under Mike Zimmer’s defensive scheme.

4. Eric Berry (Kansas City Chiefs)
Berry battled back cancer treatments to re-establish himself as a premier safety in the NFL. Since coming out of University of Tennessee, Berry has constantly put himself in the conversation for best safety in the league.

5. Kam Chancellor (Seattle Seahawks)
Perhaps no safety since Troy Polamalu lays the lumber quite like Kam. NFL fans everywhere identify the Seahawks defense with Kam. What keeps him from ranking in the top three is his propensity to serve primarily in the run defense. While that’s likely a factor of the scheme, we can’t give him credit in the passing defense when that’s not his forte.
