2015/16 Finish: Promoted via 2nd Place in Championship
Middlesbrough showed their ability by finishing 2nd last season. They were defensively sound, conceding only 31 goals, good enough for best in the league. Offensively, their goals were a team effort. David Nugent led the team with 8 goals, but 15 other players contributed with goals of their own.
Transfers In: Bernardo Espinosa (DF), Viktor Fischer (FW), Marten de Roon (MF), Victor Valdes (GK), Antonio Barragan (DF), Gaston Ramirez (MF), Brad Guzan (GK), Jordan McGhee (DF), Alvaro Negredo (FW)
Middlesbrough has been busy this offseason and they’ve made some solid moves. Bringing in Valdes and Guzan give them both, depth and experience in net. They’ve also brought in Negredo on loan. Negredo will give them a good option up front, also bringing with him some top flight experience, formerly playing with Manchester City. The moves they’ve made so far have been impressive and it’s clear Middlesbrough is looking to make a permanent move to the Premier League.
Transfers Out: Damia Abella (DF), Rhys Williams (DF), Jonathan Woodgate (DF), Luke Coddington(GK), Andre Bennet (DF), Jordan Jones (MF), Jonathan Burn (DF), Connor Ripley (GK)
While bringing in a number of players, Middlesbrough has gone relatively unscathed by departures. The players that are leaving rarely appeared in their side. That’s a good sign for a core that was able to finish 2nd last season. Any depth that they may should be countered by their moves in this window.
Key Player(s): Gaston Ramirez (MF) and Albert Adomah (FW)
Ramirez is the creative force in this side. We believe that he will be the key to their success this year. He netted 7 goals in only 18 appearances last season. He’s going to need to continue that this season. It’ll also be important for him to create opportunities for whoever ends up playing in front of him. Adomah is the other player that will likely be turned to in an effort to provide an attacking spark. He was a key player last season, and will be expected to do the same this season.
Predicted 2016/17 Finish: 14
Middlesbrough has made great moves in this transfer and window. Then consider that they’re largely the same team that earned promotion last year, and we should see another good season from Middlesbrough. While they won’t break into the top half, they should secure another season in the EPL, with relative ease.
